This particular body scan is based in part on the one used by Jeff Brantley at Duke’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program. The Gatha Script

Class 2. The purpose of the gatha is to strengthen the students’ focus on their breath when they are trying to do a sitting meditation. You will teach the students to link the words of the gatha to their breathing, repeating them silently to themselves as they watch their breath. Linking words to the breath in this way provides a “heavier” anchor for the students, and they find they can maintain their present-moment awareness more consistently. Use this script to walk your students through a guided meditation focusing on the Gatha. Updated 12/01/2015

    Walking Meditation Scripts

Class 2. Walking meditation is an important meditation to use when folks are too restless or anxious to sit still, or find themselves falling asleep during sitting meditation. In walking meditation the sensation of the feet contacting the floor, rather than breath sensations, is the primary focus. Some students find this a much more tangible anchor for their awareness and feel this helps them to focus better. Use this script to walk your students through a guided meditation focusing on walking meditation. Updated 12/04/2016

    Labeling Thoughts Script

Class 3. The guided meditation during the third class is designed to give the students more help working with their thoughts, as this is often the most problematic obstacle for them. “Labeling” thoughts is a useful technique for managing a busy mind. You will teach the students to practice labeling their thoughts and letting them go, coming back to their breath as often as they can. Use this script to walk your students through a guided meditation focusing on labeling thoughts. Updated 12/01/2015

    Labeling of Feelings Script

Class 4. The meditation in this class is designed to give the students more practice using labels, and to expand the practice to the awareness and labeling of feelings. It’s the last guided meditation for the course and an important one, so try to make sure you leave 15 minutes for it. Use this script to walk your students through a guided meditation focusing on labeling of feelings. Updated 12/01/2015

    Eating Meditation Script

Class 4. We introduce this mindfulness practice by asking the students if they have ever eaten a meal without doing something else at the same time. You may want to tell your own stories of discovering that you automatically do other things while eating. Updated 01/04/2016
